As you know, I am on the search for a leather skirt. I didn't really want a classic pencil, since I have a size 10 one from the Gap circa 2005 that is waiting for me in a couple months when I fit it again. However, I saw this one on the Nordstrom site for a hair over $100 and knew that was a pretty awesome price for a solid buttery soft lambskin (no cheap piecing, no heavy football leather). I'm not sure about it – I think it's a bit big, and the waistband rolls over too easily. I would link to it, but Nordstrom ended up having it out of stock the day after I ordered and they didn't reply to my Tweet when I asked if it would get back in stock.

I decided to try a couple new red lipsticks for fall, got a couple drugstore brands so I didn't invest a ton into something I may chicken out in actually wearing. I did a bunch of online research on popular reds, and the Revlon ColorStay Ultimate Lipstick in Top Tomato sounded right up my alley – long wearing, not too pink, not too orange, not too wine. I will be doing a full review after a couple of wearings, but so far so good! While it's drying and makes my lips stick together a bit, it is still on strong at noon after drinking coffee, eating a banana, and just consuming lunch of soup, a piece of baguette and an apple (not cut up, eaten right off the core). Impressive!

Tonight we have a happy hour to celebrate one of our favorite clients, who is retiring. A little get together at a nearby restaurant. Some may find it crazy for me to wear leather to such an event, but I don't think this look is any more wild than many of the ensembles I usually wear and this client sees me in. It's me, I love black leather, and I knew I could survive a 12-hour day in these shoes!

  1. Oh, I love this.  I just thrifted a leather pencil skirt and have a similar top so I think I’m going to try this.  You look wonderful!

  2. That skirt is perfection! I love it. I have been on the hunt for a black leather pencil skirt but I’ve got that dang budget, so I am hoping to find a vintage option on Etsy or Ebay…

Love Revlon Colorstay lipsticks! They really do last!

  3. Very cool look, Allie! And I am also *forever* on the lookout for a long-lasting red lipstick. Keep us informed.

  4. That sounds like a fun combo! May be a bit too flashy for work (most of my teammates show up in chinos and I am already seen as the dressy one), but that would make for a gorgeous date night or social affair sort of outfit! Thanks!

  5. Nice – Target chambray?  I was thinking Lands End Canvas.  I like the look.  I think the accessories added a nice punch.  Pushed the edgy vibe

  6. I love the skirt!  But do you not find the denim-leather combination too casual?  I’d love to see the shirt with your emerald shirt and animal print pumps to see how the leather comes across in a slightly more formal combo!

  7. Cute outfit. I like the rough edge of the black leather skirt and accessories and the denim shirt, but it is in a classic silhouette so it works! Can’t wait to hear your lipstick reviews because I have been into wearing it more often lately!

  8. I hardly ever clean my leather. It’s lined, I wear undergarments and take care to not spill on them. I also wear a blouse tucked in or a layer underneath so my skin/oils/sweat don’t get on the waistband. I have a leather cleaner from Coach that I have used for spot cleaning, but I can only think of a handful of times over the years that I have had my leather professionally cleaned. I have leather skirts that are over a decade old that have yet to be cleaned. 🙂

  9. I am drooling with envy over the skirt, believe me. What stops me from taking the plunge is the prospect of the cleaning bill . . . how often, if ever, do you need to professionally clean a leather skirt? Or is there something you can do at home to keep it looking new?

  10. I am so thrilled leather is back in such a big way. I think it’s very elegant, and I love being able to wear unique textures and materials for day. I remember back in the late ’90s I practically wore a piece of leather every single day – with denim, with cashmere and merino sweaters… I can see myself going back to that!

  11. Love the outfit and I think a leather skirt like this is perfectly fine for a work event!  I got a quite nice leather skirt from Talbot’s that I will certainly be wearing to work.

  12. Gurl you are quick on the draw! FIRST!!! 🙂 Thank you, I thought it was a fun combination! And having a toddler in the house, for the life of me I can’t find my big silver cuff. This leather baby has been getting a lot of play and I really like it. I think it adds a bit of toughness to my normally work-appropriate classic looks!
