I was ready for a change. I have been a natural medium to dark brown since Emerson was born. In past lives, I had hair that was black, blonde, red, plum, pink. I've also had highlights and nice chunky streaks of platinum, caramel, auburn, even purple and magenta. But as I got older I felt I needed to be more natural, and to be honest I kept my hair “normal” because I felt it was a good choice for the business of the blog. Well I got a bee in my bonnet and told my stylist Kathleen (who has been itching to do something fun on my hair for YEARS) she could get creative. I asked for a cool dark brown as the base; she bleached highlights and put a cool dark brown on the rest, then covered the whole thing with a gorgeous blue. It just looks like a very dark brown or black-brown to most, but when I move or hit the light just so you see pops of sapphire. I don't work in a conservative office environment so the only person putting a restriction on my hair was me. I thought, why not have fun with it, the great thing about hair is if you don't like it you can always fix it, cut it, or grow it out. Now I can't wait for the next sunny day to show off my fun blue highlights!

We’re grown-ass women who know better than to slather on baby oil, cover a record album with tin foil and bake in the sunshine for a deep dark tan. Hopefully we all know that though a sunkissed face looks pretty now, it will just add wrinkles and pigmentation and possibly cancer in the future. Celebrities…
Hi Allie, Do you have any thoughts on what to do for…chub rub? I’ve tried bike shorts (bulky, hot) and various other things like deodorant, etc.. I got a pair of Luvees, which seemed ideal, but I must have gotten too large a size, as they feel kind of bloomerish. Here in humid, sticky Virginia,…
It feels as though Labor Day was just a few weeks ago but here I am typing this wearing shearling boots and a fleece pullover! Fall is here and winter is right around the corner, is your wardrobe ready? Living in the DC area, we can have Christmas so warm we’re in shorts or it…
The holiday season can get a bit frantic. Come Thursday, it becomes a major snowball rolling down a very steep mountain. How is it almost December?? Last holiday season I thought I was prepared by shopping for presents early, but that’s only part of the seasonal stress. I ended up not sending out holiday cards…
While it’s fun to read about the beauty habits of celebrities, I find it most helpful to learn about the beauty habits of women who have lifestyles, ages, or budgets similar to mine. In this series, I’ve asked amazing women I know to share their beauty routines. These are women from across the country, different…
Way cool! I love the subtle wildness of the blue sheen – reminds me of my duck Limbo. In a good way, of course! 😀 I colored my hair today…boring box Warm Maple. Better than gray, ha ha! Maybe next time I’ll be brave and go to the salon.
I did the same thing last year with dark purple, and loved it! In normal situations it looked like my ordinary dark brown hair, but in the sunlight it was PURPLE. 🙂 It’s faded/grown out quite a bit now, but this has inspired me to perhaps give it another go…your blue looks fabulous!
it is outstanding, and I’ll bet is gorgeous in the sun. Six months ago I gave my brown hair chunky blue highlights and LOVED it. It faded out really well too. Back to brown all over now (my boss was polite but not keen on it). Glad I did it, even if I waited until I was 56!
My hair is now bleached in the front from gray streaks that turned orange a lot, to white, assisted by Davines Alchemic Conditioner for silver hair, lightly rubbed through as a leave-in. I find it surprisingly flattering to my neutral skin–I think your über cool blue-black hair is similarly flattering. Cool tones seem to visually counteract redness, and enhance the whites of eyes and teeth.

That reminds me of graphic-comic Wonder Woman – blue-black hair. Looks great!
After it dried I told my stylist I felt like a superhero!
KILLING IT!! You look fabulous.

It is dar-ling! I bet you feel completely sassy!

Blue highlights, I’m jealous! I love it!
